Local Link Building
Fewer links, cheaper to earn, and more relevant to a local ranking than a national placement would be.
Local link building earns links from sources national outreach never reaches: local press, sponsorships, suppliers, chambers and community organisations. The Nexclick pursues them through relationships rather than outreach volume, and they carry a kind of local relevance a national link simply cannot.
Is this you?
What usually prompts the call
- Your local competitors outrank you and their websites are visibly worse.
- Your only links are directories and your own social profiles.
- You sponsor a local team and there is no link from anywhere.
- You have relationships with local suppliers and none of them reference you online.
What we do
The actual deliverables
Things that appear on an invoice, not adjectives.
- Local link gap analysis
- Which local sources link to competitors and not to you. On a local scale this list is usually short, specific and entirely obtainable — unlike its national equivalent.
- Existing relationship audit
- Suppliers, clients, trade bodies, memberships, accreditations and sponsorships you already have. Most local businesses have earned a dozen links they have never claimed.
- Local press and community outreach
- Regional titles, community sites and local blogs. A local story needs far less to be newsworthy than a national one, which makes this genuinely achievable.
- Sponsorship and community links
- Clubs, schools, charities and events. Genuine sponsorships with a real relationship behind them, not a fee paid for a link on a page nobody reads.
- Chamber and trade body membership
- Memberships you may already pay for that include a listing nobody has claimed. Frequently the cheapest authority available to a local business.
- Local resource creation
- Something genuinely useful to your area — a local guide, a dataset, a tool — that community sites have a reason to reference.
- Reporting on relevance, not just count
- Each link named, with whether the source is genuinely local and genuinely read. Ten local links beat a hundred from national directories.
Checklist
Local links you probably already qualify for
Most local businesses have earned several of these and claimed none. Work through it before paying anyone for outreach — this list alone often produces the first ten links.
- 01Chamber of Commerce membership — check whether your listing includes a link and whether it is live.
- 02Trade association or professional body member directory.
- 03Accreditation bodies — Gas Safe, NICEIC, FMB, ISO certification registers.
- 04Suppliers who list stockists, installers or approved partners.
- 05Manufacturers whose products you fit or resell.
- 06Software or franchise partners with a partner directory.
- 07Local sports clubs or teams you sponsor.
- 08Schools or colleges you support, supply or take placements from.
- 09Charities you have donated to or fundraised for.
- 10Local business awards you have entered, won or been shortlisted for.
- 11Local events you have sponsored, hosted or exhibited at.
- 12Business parks or high street associations where you are located.
- 13Local news coverage that mentioned you without linking.
- 14Customer case studies published on a client’s own website.
- 15Local podcasts or radio you have appeared on.
- 16Your local council business directory, where one exists.
How it works
Step by step, with timeframes
Timeframes are typical rather than guaranteed, and they assume we get account access and approvals when we ask.
- 01Week 1–2
Audit what you already have
Existing relationships, memberships and sponsorships checked for unclaimed links. This stage frequently produces the first ten links at almost no cost.
- 02Week 2–3
Map the local landscape
Local press, community sites, clubs and organisations, plus which of them link to competitors.
- 03Month 2 onwards
Outreach and relationship building
Personal, low-volume, and often better done by you than by us — we prepare the approach and frequently hand it over.
- 04Monthly
Report and maintain
Links named and checked for whether they are still live. Local sites redesign and lose links more often than national ones.
What you get
Reporting and ownership
- A named list of local link targets with the specific reason each would link.
- An audit of unclaimed links from relationships you already have.
- Every link earned named with its URL, plus whether the source is genuinely local.
- Outreach templates you can use yourself, since local outreach often works better from you.
- A quarterly check that earned links are still live.
Tools and platforms
- Ahrefs (local competitor link analysis)
- Google Search Console
- Local directory and chamber listings
- Manual local research
- BuzzStream for outreach tracking
Timeline
How long this actually takes
The relationship audit produces results within two to three weeks, and it is often the highest-return part — unclaimed memberships and sponsorships are usually sitting there already. Outreach produces links steadily rather than in bursts: two to five genuinely local referring domains a quarter is a realistic rate. The honest framing is that local link building has a ceiling. There is a finite number of relevant local sources, and once you have most of them, further effort produces diminishing returns and the constraint moves elsewhere — usually to reviews or profile quality.
Pricing model
Project, then retainer
A fixed-price relationship audit first, since it produces quick wins cheaply. Ongoing outreach sits within a local SEO retainer.
Questions
Local Link Building questions
How many local links do we actually need?
Fewer than for national SEO, and the useful benchmark is what the businesses currently in your map pack have. Often that is ten to thirty genuinely local referring domains. Once you match them, the constraint usually moves to reviews or profile quality rather than links.
Is sponsoring a local team worth it just for the link?
Not just for the link. The link is modest in isolation. It is worth it where the sponsorship makes commercial sense anyway — local visibility, staff goodwill, customer relationships — and the link is a legitimate side benefit rather than the purpose. Paying purely for a sponsorship link is a paid link with a nicer name.
Do links from local directories help?
Marginally, and they are more useful as citations than as links. A genuine local directory with real traffic is worth having. A generic one that lists every business in Britain is neither a meaningful citation nor a meaningful link.
Should we do the outreach ourselves?
Often yes, for local sources. A message from the business owner to a local club or a supplier lands better than agency outreach, and takes minutes. We usually identify the targets, write the approach and hand it over, which is cheaper and more effective.
How do we get covered by our local paper?
Give them something genuinely local: an expansion, a hire, a community initiative, a comment on a local issue, or data about your area. Local titles have small teams and column inches to fill — the bar is considerably lower than national press, and a relationship with one reporter is worth more than any distribution list.
What is the difference between this and citation building?
Citations are structured listings of your name, address and phone, valued for consistency. Local links are editorial references valued for authority and relevance. Some sources provide both. Citations are hygiene; links are a genuine ranking input.
