Local SEO

Local Citation Building

Cleanup beats creation. An old address still live on nine directories does more damage than forty new listings will repair.

Citations are listings of your business name, address and phone number across directories. The Nexclick builds them on the UK sites that actually influence local rankings, and corrects the inconsistent ones already out there — which usually matters more than adding new listings.

Is this you?

What usually prompts the call

  • You moved premises or changed number and the old details are still live somewhere you cannot find.
  • Your business appears on directories you never signed up to, with details nobody checked.
  • A previous agency built two hundred citations on sites nobody has heard of.
  • Your name appears three different ways — with Ltd, without Ltd, and with a trading name.

What we do

The actual deliverables

Things that appear on an invoice, not adjectives.

Full citation audit first
Every existing listing found and compared against your correct details, before a single new one is created. You cannot build consistently on top of inconsistency.
Correction of wrong listings
Claiming and fixing what is already out there, including listings you never created. Aggregators propagate data automatically, so old details reappear unless the source is corrected.
Duplicate identification and removal
Duplicates split signals and, on Google, can suppress the main listing entirely. Finding them is manual work and it is usually the highest-value part of the job.
Core UK directory coverage
Yell, Thomson Local, Scoot, 192.com, Cylex, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and the aggregators that feed the rest. Quality of source, not quantity of listings.
Sector and local directories
Checkatrade, Trustpilot, sector bodies, chambers of commerce and local business associations. These carry more weight than a general directory and often send direct enquiries too.
A canonical NAP record
One written definition of exactly how your name, address and phone are formatted, so everyone in your business uses the identical string in future.
Ongoing monitoring
Citations drift. Directories merge, get sold and re-import old data. Quarterly rechecking catches regressions before they compound.

Comparison

Which UK citations are worth the effort

Citation packages advertising "300 listings" are mostly padding. This is our working assessment of the UK sources that matter, so you can judge any proposal — including ours — on what is actually in it.

SourceWorth it?Why
Google Business ProfileEssentialNot a citation as such — it is the listing everything else supports
Bing PlacesYesFeeds Bing and, indirectly, some AI assistants
Apple Business ConnectYesApple Maps sends real traffic and most competitors ignore it
YellYesStill the largest UK directory and a data source for others
192.comYesAggregator — feeds several downstream directories
Thomson LocalYesEstablished UK source with genuine crawl attention
Companies HouseYesAuthoritative entity record; make sure it matches
Chamber of CommerceYesLocal authority signal, and often a real referral source
Trade body / sector registerYesHighest-value citations for regulated trades
Checkatrade, Rated PeopleSector-dependentStrong for trades; irrelevant otherwise
TrustpilotSector-dependentMatters for ecommerce and consumer services
Local newspaper directoriesSometimesGenuine local relevance where the paper is real
Generic "free business listing" sitesNoNo traffic, no authority, no crawl attention
Directories with 200+ listing packagesNoPadding. Frequently a footprint rather than a signal.

How it works

Step by step, with timeframes

Timeframes are typical rather than guaranteed, and they assume we get account access and approvals when we ask.

  1. 01Week 1–2

    Audit

Every existing citation found and scored as correct, inconsistent or duplicate. This is manual and it is the part that determines everything after.

  2. 02Week 2–6

    Correct and remove

Wrong listings claimed and fixed, duplicates removed. Some directories are slow or awkward, and a few require postal verification.

  3. 03Month 2–3

    Build

New listings on the sources that matter, using the canonical NAP record. Quality over volume, always.

  4. 04Quarterly

    Monitor

Recheck for drift and re-imported old data. This is the step that stops the work unwinding over eighteen months.

What you get

Reporting and ownership

  • The full citation audit as a spreadsheet: every listing, its status and its login where one exists.
  • A written canonical NAP record your whole team can copy from.
  • Logins and ownership of every listing created, held by you rather than by us.
  • Quarterly drift reports showing anything that has reverted.
  • A named list of directories we recommend ignoring, and why.

Tools and platforms

  • BrightLocal or Whitespark citation tracker
  • Google Business Profile
  • Bing Places & Apple Business Connect
  • Manual directory verification
  • Companies House records

Timeline

How long this actually takes

The audit takes two weeks. Corrections take four to eight weeks, because directories move at their own pace and some require postal verification that cannot be accelerated. Ranking effects are indirect and slow — citations are a trust and consistency signal rather than a lever, and nobody should expect a position change in the week the listings go live. The honest framing is that citations are hygiene: getting them wrong actively hurts, getting them right removes a handicap rather than creating an advantage.

Questions

Local Citation Building questions

How many citations do we need?

Fewer than most packages sell. Twenty to forty accurate listings on sources that matter outperform three hundred on sites with no traffic and no authority. The number is not the metric; consistency across sources that are actually crawled is.

Does it matter if the details are slightly different?

Yes, more than people expect. "Street" against "St", a suite number present in one place and absent in another, an old phone number — these create ambiguity about whether it is the same business. It is a trust signal, and small inconsistencies at scale do measurable harm.

How do we fix a listing we never created?

Most directories have a claim process using phone or email verification at the listed contact details, which is awkward if those details are the wrong ones. Some require documentary evidence. A few are genuinely unresponsive, and where that happens we will tell you rather than billing repeated attempts.

We moved premises. What is the order of operations?

Google Business Profile first, then the aggregators, then individual directories, then your website and schema — and do not skip the aggregators, because they will re-propagate the old address and undo everything else. Expect the tail to take two to three months to fully clear.

Are citations still a ranking factor?

Their positive influence has diminished over the last decade. The negative influence of inconsistency has not. That asymmetry is the whole argument for treating this as cleanup rather than as a growth activity, and for spending accordingly.

Should we use an automated citation service?

For a small number of major aggregators, they are efficient. What they do badly is finding and fixing incorrect existing listings, which is the part that matters most and the part that requires a person. Automation builds; it does not clean up.
