Paid Advertising
YouTube Ads
Paid placement on YouTube, not building a channel. If you want the channel, that is a separate and considerably slower service.
YouTube advertising buys attention before, during and around video, in formats ranging from unskippable six-second bumpers to long skippable ads. The Nexclick chooses the format for the job first, because most disappointing YouTube campaigns used a brand format to chase a direct response outcome.
Is this you?
What usually prompts the call
- You ran a YouTube campaign, collected a lot of views, and nothing else happened.
- Your advert is a television commercial with the first five seconds spent on a logo.
- Nobody agreed what the campaign was for before it launched.
- Spend is going to placements you would never have chosen deliberately.
What we do
The actual deliverables
Things that appear on an invoice, not adjectives.
- Choose the format for the objective
- Bumpers and non-skippable for reach, skippable in-stream for consideration, in-feed for intent, demand generation for direct response. On this platform the format is the strategy.
- Front-load the first five seconds
- On skippable placements you are paying for attention you have to earn immediately. A logo animation in that window is paying full price for a skip.
- Target by intent wherever possible
- Custom segments built from search behaviour and sites visited, which is far stronger than demographic or topic targeting and is what makes YouTube genuinely competitive with search.
- Exclude the placements that waste money
- Children’s content, made-for-advertising channels and app inventory. The default is broad and includes a great deal nobody would select if they were asked.
- Sequence campaigns where budget allows
- A short introduction followed by a longer proposition shown only to people who watched it. Considerably more effective than showing one asset to everybody repeatedly until they resent it.
- Measure beyond views
- View-through rate, cost per completed view, brand search movement and tracked conversions. View count is the number the platform leads with and the least useful one available.
- Cap frequency deliberately
- YouTube will happily show one asset to the same person twenty times. Caps set at account and campaign level are the difference between awareness and irritation.
- Match the edit to the format length
- A sixty-second asset trimmed to six is not a bumper. Each format wants its own edit, planned at production rather than salvaged afterwards by an editor with the wrong footage.
Comparison
YouTube ad formats, and what each is actually for
Most disappointing YouTube campaigns bought the wrong format for the objective. Find your objective in the middle column first, and note that the right measure differs in every single row.
| Format | The job it does | Judge it on |
|---|---|---|
| Bumper, 6 seconds | Reach and reminder, one idea only | Reach and frequency — never clicks |
| Skippable in-stream | Consideration, if the first five seconds earn it | View-through rate and cost per completed view |
| Non-skippable, 15 seconds | Guaranteed delivery to a defined audience | Reach, and movement in branded search |
| In-feed video | Intent — somebody actively chose to watch | Click-through and tracked conversions |
| Demand generation | Direct response across YouTube and Discover | Cost per acquisition against real margin |
| Masthead | Mass reach on a launch day, bought in advance | Reach against the cost of any alternative |
| Sequenced campaigns | Introduce, then persuade the people who watched | Progression rate between the steps |
| A TV advert uploaded unchanged | Very little | The skip rate, which will tell you quickly |
How it works
Step by step, with timeframes
Timeframes are typical rather than guaranteed, and they assume we get account access and approvals when we ask.
- 01Week 1
Objective and format
What the campaign is for and which format serves it, agreed and written down before creative is discussed at all.
- 02Week 1–3
Creative and tracking
Assets edited per format, conversion tracking verified, and placement exclusion lists built before launch rather than after the first report.
- 03Week 3–5
Launch and refine
Live with intent-led targeting, placements pruned through the first fortnight, and frequency monitored from day one.
- 04Monthly
Report and iterate
Against the measure agreed at the start, with creative rotated before fatigue rather than in response to it.
What you get
Reporting and ownership
- A format chosen for the objective, with the reasoning written down before production.
- Creative edited per format rather than one asset trimmed to fit three.
- Placement exclusion lists applied and maintained, not set once and left.
- Reporting on completed views, brand search movement and tracked conversions.
- Everything in your own Google Ads account, on your own billing.
Tools and platforms
- Google Ads video campaigns
- Custom segments built from search intent
- Placement exclusion lists
- Brand lift measurement where budget qualifies
- GA4 and offline conversion import
Timeline
How long this actually takes
Three to five weeks to launch including creative editing, then four to six weeks before results are readable. The commonest failure here is a mismatch nobody noticed at the briefing: a brand format bought against a direct response target, or a direct response format carrying a brand message. Both produce a campaign that technically ran and achieved nothing anybody can point at afterwards. One honest note. YouTube advertising and building a YouTube channel are different services on different timescales — advertising delivers reach this month, a channel takes most of a year. If somebody sold you one while you were expecting the other, resolve that before any budget moves.
Pricing model
Monthly retainer
Monthly management, usually inside a wider Google Ads retainer since YouTube campaigns are bought in the same account. Creative editing quoted separately by the number of formats required.
Questions
YouTube Ads questions
Is this the same as building a YouTube channel?
No. This is paid placement — you buy attention against video other people made, and it delivers reach this month. Building a channel means a series of your own, search optimisation, retention work, and most of a year before it contributes anything. Different budgets and timescales, frequently confused at the point of sale.
What happens in the first five seconds of a skippable ad?
Everything. Those five seconds are all you are guaranteed, and on most formats you are not charged unless the viewer stays past them — so a logo animation there is buying a skip at full price. Lead with the problem, the face or the product, and put the branding in shot rather than before it.
Which YouTube ad format should we use?
Work backwards from the objective. Reach and reminder means bumpers. Consideration means skippable in-stream with a hook that earns the next twenty seconds. Direct response means demand generation campaigns or in-feed. The mismatch between format and objective is the most expensive mistake available on this platform.
Can we use our television advert on YouTube?
You can, and it usually underperforms. TV creative builds slowly towards a reveal because the viewer cannot skip; YouTube viewers can and will after five seconds. A re-edit that front-loads the message costs very little next to the media budget and changes the result substantially.
How do we stop our ads appearing on irrelevant content?
Placement exclusion lists, content suitability settings, and excluding app inventory and made-for-advertising channels at account level. Then review actual placements monthly, because new channels appear constantly. The default settings are broad, and nobody chooses those placements — they simply never look.
How do we measure YouTube advertising beyond views?
Cost per completed view, view-through rate, and movement in branded search volume during and after a flight. Add tracked conversions where the format is direct response. Views alone tell you the media was delivered, which is the least interesting thing you could know about a campaign.
Is YouTube advertising expensive?
On a cost-per-reach basis it is one of the cheapest video options available, considerably below broadcast. On a cost-per-conversion basis it depends entirely on format and creative. The expensive version is a brand format bought with direct response expectations, which is how most disappointing figures get produced.
