Paid Advertising
Amazon PPC
Advertising and organic rank are the same system on Amazon. That is what makes this different from every other channel in the pillar.
Amazon PPC covers Sponsored Products, Brands and Display inside Amazon’s own results. The Nexclick fixes the listing before raising a bid, because advertising sends traffic to a page Amazon also ranks organically — so a weak listing wastes the click and damages the organic position with it.
Is this you?
What usually prompts the call
- ACoS looks acceptable and nobody has checked it against actual margin.
- You are bidding on terms your listing does not convert for.
- Automatic campaigns have run for a year with no negatives added.
- A competitor is advertising against your brand name inside Amazon.
What we do
The actual deliverables
Things that appear on an invoice, not adjectives.
- Fix the listing before touching a bid
- Title, bullets, backend search terms, images and A+ content. Advertising to a poorly converting listing wastes the click and, because sales velocity feeds organic rank, actively harms the position you were building.
- Structure by product and by match type
- Automatic campaigns for discovery, manual exact for terms that have proven themselves, with harvested keywords promoted deliberately rather than left running broad indefinitely.
- Harvest and negate every week
- Search term reports mined for winners to promote and losers to exclude. The same discipline as Google search, and just as reliably neglected in inherited Amazon accounts.
- Report against real margin rather than ACoS
- ACoS ignores Amazon fees, cost of goods and returns. A 25% ACoS is comfortable on one product and loss-making on another, and the account-level figure tells you nothing about either.
- Defend your own brand terms
- Competitors bid on your brand inside Amazon and appear above your listing. Defensive campaigns are cheap because your relevance is high, and skipping them is expensive in a way nobody notices.
- Use each ad type for its actual job
- Sponsored Brands for category presence and product range, Sponsored Display for retargeting and for appearing on competitor listings. Neither substitutes for Sponsored Products.
- Pause with stock in mind
- Advertising a product about to go out of stock buys clicks that convert nothing and damages the listing’s standing. Stock-aware pausing is basic commercial sense and is rarely automated.
- Track total sales, not only advertised sales
- Because advertising and organic rank feed each other, accounts optimised purely on ACoS routinely end up buying sales they would have made organically anyway.
Decision tree
Is your listing ready to advertise?
Advertising a weak listing costs you twice — once for the click, and again in the organic rank that poor conversion drags down. Work through this before increasing any bid.
01Your conversion rate is well below the category average
Fix the listing first. Every advertised click at that rate subsidises a page not doing its job, and it pulls your organic position down at the same time.
02You have fewer than about fifteen reviews on the product
Advertise lightly at most. Shoppers filter on reviews, so you will pay for clicks that were never going to convert. Build reviews through legitimate programmes first.
03Your main image is poor or does not meet Amazon requirements
Stop and fix the image. It is the single largest conversion lever on any listing and it costs nothing in media to change.
04A+ content is available to you and unused
Use it before increasing spend. It is free, it lifts conversion, and it makes every advertised click you subsequently buy worth more than it was.
05Your price sits materially above competing listings
Advertising will not overcome that. Amazon shoppers compare on a single screen. Either justify the difference on the listing itself, or address the price.
06Stock is low or unpredictable
Pause rather than push. Running out mid-campaign wastes spend and damages the listing’s standing, which takes considerably longer to recover than the stock does.
07Your listing converts well and reviews are healthy
Advertise, and structure it properly — automatic for discovery, manual exact for proven terms, and a defensive campaign on your own brand.
08A competitor is appearing above you on your own brand name
Run a defensive brand campaign now. Your relevance makes it cheap, and leaving it unaddressed is among the more expensive things you can fail to do here.
How it works
Step by step, with timeframes
Timeframes are typical rather than guaranteed, and they assume we get account access and approvals when we ask.
- 01Week 1–2
Listing and account audit
Listing quality, conversion rate by product, existing campaign structure and where spend currently goes. The listing work almost always comes first.
- 02Week 2–3
Listing optimisation
Titles, bullets, backend terms and imagery, because everything downstream of this depends on the page actually converting the traffic sent to it.
- 03Week 3–4
Campaign restructure
Automatic for discovery, manual for proven terms, defensive brand campaigns built, and negative lists applied properly.
- 04Ongoing, weekly
Manage and harvest
Search term harvesting, negatives, bid adjustment against margin, and stock-aware pausing before a product runs out rather than after.
What you get
Reporting and ownership
- Listings optimised before any budget is increased, because the click depends on them.
- Reporting against true margin after fees and returns, not ACoS on its own.
- Defensive brand campaigns, so competitors stop appearing above your own listing.
- Weekly search term harvesting, with winners promoted and losers excluded.
- Stock-aware pausing, so you stop paying for clicks on products about to run out.
Tools and platforms
- Amazon Advertising console
- Amazon Seller or Vendor Central
- Search term and business reports
- Helium 10 or Jungle Scout for keyword research
- Product-level margin and fee data
Timeline
How long this actually takes
Four to five weeks, with the first two spent on the listing rather than the campaigns. Results appear quickly afterwards — Amazon shoppers are close to purchase, so the feedback loop is short. One structural point is worth understanding before commissioning this. On Amazon, advertising and organic rank are the same system: advertised sales contribute to sales velocity, velocity lifts organic position, and a better organic position reduces how much you need to advertise. An account judged only on ACoS can therefore look efficient while quietly buying sales it would have had for nothing. We report total sales alongside advertised sales, which is the less flattering view and the only one that tells you whether the spend achieved anything.
Pricing model
Monthly retainer
Monthly management retainer, with listing optimisation usually quoted as a project at the start. Ad spend is billed by Amazon directly to your own seller account.
Questions
Amazon PPC questions
Is ACoS a good measure of performance?
On its own, no. It compares ad spend to advertised revenue and ignores Amazon fees, cost of goods and returns entirely. A 25% ACoS can be comfortably profitable on one product and a loss on another. Total advertising cost of sale against real margin is the figure that matters.
Why does the listing matter more than the bid?
Because Amazon rewards conversion. A listing that converts poorly makes every click more expensive, wins fewer auctions over time, and loses organic rank as sales velocity falls. Bidding harder on a weak listing accelerates all three problems rather than solving any of them.
Should we bid on our own brand name on Amazon?
Yes. Competitors do, and they appear directly above your listing on a search for your own name. Your relevance makes those clicks cheap, and the alternative is paying nothing while handing a shopper who specifically wanted you to somebody else.
What is the difference between Sponsored Products, Brands and Display?
Sponsored Products promote a single item in search results and carry most of the return. Sponsored Brands show a logo and a product range, useful for category presence. Sponsored Display retargets and places you on competitor listings. They do different jobs and are not interchangeable.
How do automatic and manual campaigns work together?
Automatic campaigns discover which search terms convert; manual exact campaigns then own those terms at a controlled bid, with the automatic campaign negating them so the two stop competing. Running automatic alone forever means never converting discovery into control.
Does Amazon advertising help organic rank?
Indirectly and genuinely. Advertised sales count towards sales velocity, which is a significant organic ranking factor. This is why launches often justify aggressive early spend, and also why an account can look inefficient on ACoS while building something valuable.
Should we advertise on Amazon or on Google Shopping?
Both, usually, because they capture different moments — Amazon shoppers are inside a buying environment, Google shoppers are still choosing where to buy. The mistake is running them independently and never checking whether they are competing for the same customer on the same product.
